The Rockland County Sheriff's Office and the Rockland County Police Academy conduct HR 218 certification programs for retired Federal, State and Municipal officers. Attendees must have retired in good standing from a law enforcement organization, possess a valid NY State Pistol Permit or a current HR218 card or document, and completed the Sworn Affidavit and Indemnity form. (The Indemnity forms will be given out for signatures at the range.) They may then qualify on a course of fire that permits persons with passing scores to receive a HR 218 card.
Academy staff members, Range Safety officers and others who are assisting at the range are there for the purposes of helping to insure safety and facilitate the shooting the qualification course.
They are not spokes persons for the Sheriff's Office nor the Police Academy. They are not in positions to give opinions relating to the law as to relates to HR 218 issues; nor are they to be considered authorities on the carrying of large capacity magazines, types of ammunition to be used in weapons.
Any and all issues relating to the above or other HR 218 questions should be directed to an attorney or referred to the "Sheepdogacademy" web site.
If a member of the staff speaks about any issues relating to HR 218 other than the qualifying course of fire and or the safety and or range rules is doing so as an individual and their comments, advice and counsel should not be considered to be correct or serve as an endorsement by the Rockland County Sheriff's Office or the Rockland County Police Academy.
